RPO code
An RPO code is a three-character Regular Production Option code that General Motors assigns to a factory option, printed on the vehicle's service parts identification label and used at the parts counter to pin down the exact engine, axle or transmission variant a part has to match.

An RPO code is a three-character Regular Production Option code that General Motors assigns to a factory option, printed on the service parts identification label and used at the parts counter to name the exact variant a part has to match. Every option the truck left the plant with has one, from the paint to the rear gear.
The counter cares about a handful of them. The rest are trim.
Where do you find the RPO codes on a GM vehicle?
On the service parts identification label, which on most GM trucks is a sticker inside the glovebox lid. Some models put it in the center console. Some put it on the spare tire cover in the bed. The label carries the VIN, the paint code and a block of three-character codes in alphanumeric order.
Take a photo of it at write-up and attach it to the repair order. It costs the advisor ten seconds and it saves the parts call later, because the codes are unreadable from memory and the truck is on a lift by the time anybody needs them.
What does an RPO code tell you that a VIN decode does not?
The parts that vary within one model. NHTSA's public vPIC decoder is the free reference for what a VIN carries, and what it returns is the vehicle's identity: make, model, model year, body and engine, from the manufacturer's own submissions.
What it does not return is the build. A VIN decode will tell you the truck has a Duramax in it. It will not tell you the rear axle ratio, and the ratio is the only thing that matters when you are buying a ring and pinion.
That gap is written into the federal rule, so no decoder is going to close it. 49 CFR 565.15 sets what the VIN's descriptor characters have to make decipherable, and for a truck the table reads "Make, model or line, series, chassis, cab type, engine type, brake system, gross vehicle weight rating" plus the restraint devices on the lighter ones. Nothing in there is a gear ratio, a differential type or a transfer case. The RPO label is where the factory wrote those down.
Which RPO codes matter most at the parts counter?
The ones that change hardware. Engine codes name the Duramax generation, and LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML and L5P are six different engines wearing the same badge with different injectors, different fuel systems and different service procedures. MW7 says the truck has the Allison behind it. G80 says the rear differential is a locker, which changes everything inside the housing.
Axle ratio has its own code, and two trucks that look identical in the lot can carry different ones. Give the counter the code off the label and the conversation is over in one line. Guess at it and the part that arrives is a return with a restocking fee behind it.
What does the wrong RPO do to the ticket?
It buys the wrong part and it burns a day. A differential job ordered on a guess arrives, the tech opens the box and the ratio is wrong. Now the truck is on a stand while somebody arranges a return and a re-order, and the shop is holding a restocking fee on a large part plus a bay it cannot use.
The parts side has its own tail. A returned special-order part sometimes cannot go back at all, and the shop eats it. Check the line card return policy before ordering anything driveline off an assumption, because the counter's answer changes by supplier.
Write the codes onto the ticket the first time somebody reads them. A photo of the label attached to the repair order means the next person ordering for that truck reads a record instead of walking out to the lot, and it survives past this visit, which is when the same question comes back around.
Do other manufacturers use RPO codes?
They use the same idea and call it something else. Ford stamps axle and transmission codes onto the vehicle certification label in the driver's door jamb. That label is federally required and its minimum contents are fixed by rule: 49 CFR 567.4 makes it carry the manufacturer's name, the month and year of manufacture, the weight ratings, the VIN and the type classification of the vehicle. A gear ratio is nowhere on that list. Ford prints one anyway, and the reason is the parts counter. Stellantis calls its version sales codes and prints them on the build sheet. The vocabulary changes; the job does not.
What makes GM different is that the counter asks for the code out loud. A parts department taking a Duramax order expects to hear an engine RPO and a gear code, and a shop that has them ready gets the right box on the first try. Everything downstream of that, from supersession checks to the will-call pickup, runs cleaner when the first number was right.

Questions shops ask
- Where is the RPO list on a GM truck?
- On the service parts identification label. It is usually a sticker on the inside of the glovebox lid, and on some models it lives in the center console or on the spare tire cover. The label carries the VIN, the paint code and a grid of three-character codes covering every factory option on that truck.
- Why do I need the RPO if I already gave the counter the VIN?
- Because a VIN decode stops short of the parts that vary. Run a truck through NHTSA's public vPIC decoder and it will name the engine and the body, and it will not give you the rear axle ratio. Order a ring and pinion off a VIN alone and you are guessing between two ratios that take different parts.
- What does G80 mean?
- G80 is the RPO for a locking rear differential. It changes the carrier, the internals and the parts list for anything that goes inside that housing, so a rear-end job on a G80 truck and the same job on a truck without it are two different orders.
- Do Ford and Ram have RPO codes?
- They have the same idea under different names. Ford prints axle and transmission codes on the vehicle certification label in the driver's door jamb. Stellantis calls them sales codes and lists them on the build sheet. GM is the one where the counter will ask you for the code by name.
- What happens if the RPO label is gone?
- Read the parts instead. The axle tag on the differential cover, the casting numbers on the housing and the tag on the transmission all carry enough to narrow it down. A dealer parts department can also pull the original build record from the VIN, which takes one phone call and beats a wrong part by two days.
