Single-use fastener
A single-use fastener is a bolt, nut, clamp or washer that a manufacturer's service procedure requires be discarded and replaced during reassembly, because installing it once deforms it past the point where it can hold its clamp load again.

A single-use fastener is a bolt, nut, clamp or washer the manufacturer's procedure tells you to throw away and replace during reassembly. Installing it once deforms it on purpose, so the second install starts from a part that has already given up what made it work. They cost a few dollars each. They stop jobs cold.
Why can a fastener only go in once?
Because the deformation is the design. A torque-to-yield bolt is tightened past its elastic limit so that the clamp load across a head or a main cap is set by how far the bolt stretched, which is more repeatable than friction on a thread. Reuse it and the starting length is wrong, so the finished load is wrong.
Crush washers and collapsible spacers work the same way in a different shape. The washer flattens into a seal and cannot flatten twice. A pinion crush sleeve sets bearing preload by collapsing a measured amount, and a reused one gives a preload nobody can predict from a torque reading. Anywhere a joint gets its number from a shape change, the part is a one-time part.
How is a torque-to-yield bolt tightened?
In stages, and the last stage is measured in degrees. A head bolt specification usually runs a snug pass to seat the joint, a torque pass to a set value, then one or two angle passes of a stated number of degrees, all in the sequence the procedure prints.
Torque readings stop meaning much once a fastener yields, because most of what the wrench reads is friction in the threads and under the head. Rotation does not have that problem. A stated number of degrees of turn puts a known amount of stretch into the bolt every time, and the stretch is what clamps the joint. A specification written as a value followed by degrees is the procedure telling you the bolt is a one-time part before it says so in words.
NASA's Fastener Design Manual (RP-1228) gives the range friction covers without softening it: "The coefficient of friction can vary from 0.04 to 1.10, depending on the materials and the lubricants being used between mating materials." A wrench reading taken through that is a friction reading with a clamp load somewhere behind it, which is what the angle pass is there to get around.
Which parts are on the list?
More than most estimates carry. Head bolts, main and rod bolts, exhaust manifold hardware, axle and hub nuts, ring gear bolts, castle nuts with cotter pins, banjo bolt sealing washers, V-band clamps and most gasket-side hardware all show up as discard-and-replace somewhere in the procedures. Torque-to-yield bolts are the best known of them and the narrowest group, and the flywheel and flexplate hardware on a lot of platforms belongs there too.
The list is vehicle-specific and it changes between engines in the same body. That is why the answer lives in the procedure for the exact year, make and engine, the same lookup that produces book time, and why "we always reuse those" is a habit and not information.
Where do they hide on a diesel job?
In the fuel and exhaust sides, which is where the money is. A turbo job brings clamps and manifold hardware that the parts summary never lists. High-pressure fuel lines, injector hold-down hardware and the sealing washers under an injector all turn up as discard-and-replace in the procedures that cover them, and every one of those calls has to be read off the procedure for the exact engine instead of remembered.
None of these are expensive parts. All of them are the difference between a job that closes on Thursday and a job that waits for a hot-shot delivery on Friday morning. On a ticket where labor runs eight hours, the hardware is a rounding error until it is the reason nobody can bill the eight hours.
What does a missing fastener do to the ticket?
It reopens a closed conversation. The customer approved a total, the tech needs $40 of hardware, and California is clear about what happens next: consent is required for work or parts beyond the estimate, and when that consent is oral the shop must note "the date, time, name of person authorizing the additional repairs, and telephone number called, if any, together with a specification of the additional parts and labor and the total additional cost." That is a phone call, a note and a delay, over a bag of bolts.
The cheaper path is to catch them while the estimate is being built. The discard-and-replace lines sit in the procedure body, below the parts summary most people read, and kit contents will tell you which ones a gasket set already includes. A line the shop cannot price yet stays on the repair order as an open question, because a part that quietly disappears off an estimate is a part nobody orders.
How does a shop stop losing these?
By treating the hardware as part of the job instead of an afterthought at the parts counter. Shops that run the same jobs weekly build the fasteners into the canned job so they price automatically every time, which is the only version of this that survives a busy Tuesday. The rest gets caught by whoever reads the procedure carefully, and that person is not always available at 4 p.m.

Questions shops ask
- Why can't a stretch bolt be reused?
- Because the clamp load comes from the stretch. A torque-to-yield bolt is tightened past its elastic limit on purpose so it holds a known load across a joint that heats and cools. Once it has yielded, a second install starts from an already-stretched bolt, and the load it ends up holding is anybody's guess.
- How do I know a fastener is single-use?
- The service procedure says so, usually in a short line telling the tech to discard the old hardware and install new. It rarely appears in the parts summary at the top of the operation, so it lives in the body text somebody has to read. Kit contents are the other place to look, because some kits already include the hardware.
- What happens if a tech reuses one?
- Often nothing on the day, which is why it keeps happening. The failure shows up as a slow leak, a joint that loosens under heat cycling or a bolt that snaps on the next service. The comeback costs the shop the labor twice and the customer never hears why.
- Why do single-use fasteners get left off the estimate?
- Because they are cheap and they hide in the procedure text. A sealing washer never feels like a line worth building, so the estimate goes out complete except for the few small parts that stop the job. The tech finds out with the truck already in pieces.
- Can I substitute a grade 8 bolt for a stretch bolt?
- No. A grade 8 bolt is stiffer and holds its load through a different range, and the joint was designed around the stretch curve of the original part. Head bolts, main cap bolts and rod bolts all sit in this category. Buy the hardware the procedure lists and put it on the estimate as its own line.
- Does non-dealer hardware affect the factory warranty?
- A manufacturer generally cannot condition warranty coverage on the use of its own branded parts. The Federal Trade Commission's guide to federal warranty law says tie-in sales provisions are generally not allowed, meaning provisions that state or imply a consumer must buy from a particular company to keep coverage. What matters at the counter is the specification: the replacement has to match the original on grade, thread and length.
- Do I need a new authorization to add hardware mid-job?
- If it pushes the total past what the customer approved, yes. California requires consent for charges above the estimate and, when that consent is oral, a notation on the work order of the date, time, name of the person authorizing and the added amount. A quick call is cheap. A surprise on the invoice is not.
