Long block
A long block is a partly assembled engine sold as one unit with the cylinder block, crankshaft, rods, pistons, cylinder heads and valvetrain already installed, and with no intake, fuel system or bolt-on accessories included.

A long block is an engine assembly sold as one unit: the cylinder block with the crankshaft, rods and pistons already in it, plus the cylinder heads and valvetrain bolted on top. Everything that makes the engine run stays with the old one and gets carried across by the technician.
What comes in a long block and what does not?
The bottom end is built and the heads are on. Timing components, gaskets and seals ride along on most listings, and the oil pan sometimes does. Nothing else.
The list that does not come in the crate is longer and it is the one that prices the job: intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, turbocharger, injectors, high-pressure fuel pump, water pump, oil cooler, sensors, engine wiring, flywheel, accessory brackets, alternator, starter. Each of those comes off the engine on the stand and gets looked at before it goes back onto the new one. That transfer is where the hours live.
A rebuilder's parts list describes what is in the crate. It says nothing about what the job needs around it, which is why an estimate built from the part number alone comes up short every time.
How does a long block differ from a short block or a crate engine?
A short block stops at the deck. Block, crank, rods, pistons, no heads, no valvetrain. Buying one means the shop or a machine shop is handling the head work, and it makes sense when the heads that came off are known good.
A crate engine goes the other direction. It arrives closer to complete, often with the intake and the accessory drive already on it, and on some applications with the wiring already routed. More money up front and fewer hours on the clock. The difference between markup and margin matters here, because a crate engine moves dollars out of labor and into parts, and the two carry different gross profit.
What does a long block do to the repair order?
It stretches every part of the ticket. The core charge comes back on a pallet, which means a scheduled truck and a dock rather than a box in the parts driver's hand. Freight is real money and it belongs on the estimate on its own line. The remove and replace time from a published guide covers pulling the engine and putting one back, and it assumes nothing seized, nothing snapped, nothing needs a machine shop.
Then come the parts nobody quotes. Motor mounts that crumble on the way out. Turbo studs. Single-use fasteners on the rod caps and the head bolts. Coolant, oil, filters, an oil cooler the rebuilder requires. A shop that skips these on the estimate makes the call from the bay two days in, and that call costs more approval than the original one did.
Why does a diesel long block rarely ship alone?
Because the engine is one line on a longer estimate. Everything the failure touched has to be inspected before the new unit runs, and on a diesel that means the injection hardware and the cooling side as well as the mounts and the accessories moving across.
The trap is quoting the engine and stopping. A shop that installs a long block without settling what caused the first one to fail is holding the exposure on the second one, and that is a comeback measured in thousands. Read the rebuilder's own install conditions before the estimate goes out, because those conditions are the terms of the only warranty behind the part. The Federal Trade Commission tells customers what that warranty usually leaves out: many manufacturers cover replacement parts "but not the labor to install them." On an engine job the labor is most of the money.
On a heavy-duty engine the rebuild itself is regulated work. 40 CFR 86.004-40 states that it applies "to heavy-duty engines subject to model year 2004 or later standards" and to "the process of engine rebuilding (or rebuilding a portion of an engine or engine system)," and it is blunt about the monitors: emissions-related codes "may not be erased or reset without diagnosing and responding appropriately to the diagnostic codes," and the diagnostic system has to be free of them when the engine goes back into service. The same section calls for records of the rebuild, down to the hours on the engine when the work happened and a list of the parts that went in, held for two years. Clearing the codes to make the dash look right is the one shortcut the rule names by hand.
Those rebuilder conditions have a legal shape worth knowing before you argue with a claims department. The Federal Trade Commission's guide for businesses says a tie-in provision, one stating or implying that "a consumer must buy or use an item or service from a particular company to keep their warranty coverage," is generally prohibited. The same guide permits a warrantor to "disclaim warranty coverage for defects or damage caused by the use of parts or service you didn't provide." So the rebuilder cannot force their brand of oil cooler onto your parts list, and they can decline the claim when the cooler you carried over takes the new engine out at 400 miles. Quote the cooler.
What kills the gross profit on an engine job?
Four things, and none of them are the engine price. Transfer labor quoted from the removal time alone. Freight and core handling nobody put on a line. Machine work on the parts moving over, which is sublet and gets forgotten. And the second teardown, when something transferred over fails and the engine comes back out.
Engine jobs are the highest-dollar tickets a small shop writes, so an error rate that is survivable on brake work is not survivable here. Pricing one is worth doing slowly. The guide on how an estimate gets priced walks the same sequence a writer should run before this quote leaves the building.

Questions shops ask
- What is the difference between a long block and a short block?
- A short block stops at the deck surface. Block, crankshaft, rods and pistons, with no cylinder heads on it. A long block adds the heads and the valvetrain, which means the customer is paying for machine work and parts that a short block leaves to the shop or a machine shop.
- Does a long block come with a warranty?
- Every rebuilder publishes one and every one of them attaches conditions, so the terms have to be read before the job is quoted rather than after it fails. Watch the labor side in particular, because the warranty on the part and the warranty on the work are two separate promises and the second one is usually yours. Whatever your rebuilder requires goes onto the repair order the day the job is written.
- Is there a core charge on a long block?
- Yes, and it is large enough to change how the ticket reads. The old engine has to go back on a pallet, drained and complete enough for the rebuilder to accept it, inside their return window. A long block core that sits behind the shop for six weeks turns into a deposit nobody gets back.
- What does not come in the box?
- Intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, turbocharger, injectors, fuel pump, sensors, wiring, flywheel, accessory brackets and usually the water pump. All of it moves off the old engine, which is why the transfer work runs longer than the published removal time suggests.
- Why does a diesel long block quote look so much bigger?
- Because the long block is rarely the whole job. Everything that does not come in the crate has to be inspected and transferred, and on a diesel that list runs to the injection hardware, the turbo and the cooling components. Quoting the engine alone and finding the rest later is how a shop ends up eating the difference.
